Lots of folks think "special occasion" when they think about wearing vintage--party dresses and beaded bags or clutches to go with them, opera coats, Kentucky Derby hats, vintage wedding gowns, Springolators for Viva Las Vegas, and so on. But working vintage into your everyday wardrobe is a breeze with bags and shoes. I literally never go out of the house without a vintage shoulder bag--they're all I carry for day use, especially since the last contemporary bag I bought (leather and retailing at over $100) looked like a drowned rat six months after I got it. It makes economic sense, too. You can buy two or three, maybe more, vintage Coach bags, for example, for the price of one new one. Or, probably eight to 10 off-brand, but very high-quality, bags for the price of almost any new designer piece.

Oh, and don't get me started on shoes.... For what gals pay today for a pair of good faux leather shoes, you can get a great pair of real leather, comfortable shoes in sizes that really fit your feet! None of this "you can only get Narrow, Medium, or Wide in one shoe" business. You have medium-width feet but narrow heels, like me? Then buy a vintage pair of shoes in a "B" foot with an "A" heel, or an "A" foot and an "AA" heel. I have to put heel pads in almost every pair of shoes I buy new, but when I get the right size in a vintage shoe, it fits like the proverbial glove.

From the classic Kelly bag to cute wicker bags, and from a 1950s' pair of heels to 60s' chunky-heeled pumps, you can find find vintage styles perfect for accenting suits, dresses, skirts, and slacks and for wearing every day. Vintage is not just for special occasions!

Celebrate New Year's Eve in (Vintage) Style!

We of vintage age remember the days when our parents, and then, later, we ourselves, would go out on the town for New Year's Eve. That meant getting "dressed to the nines" and going out for dinner and a party afterwards. Even the most casual of restaurant dinners or a typical house party called for dressing up. Short dresses, maxi skirts, or evening slacks were standard fare for those events. And then there were the formal galas, held at fancy ballrooms or the most elegant restaurants in town. Ladies in evening gowns and their finest jewelry, men in formal suits or tuxedos, an orchestra to which to dance....

I remember my mom and her friends breaking out their fancy stoles or wraps, beaded and sequined clutch bags, and dressiest heels. My sister and I were in awe of how lovely they looked and how their dresses "swished" as they danced out the door on their way out for the night. And, when we were older, we would get dressed up and go out as well. Although the "age of casual" was approaching even then, we women would wear cocktail dresses or casual long dresses, and the men would wear sports jackets with ties. Dinner and dancing were still standard entertainment, then we would do the rounds of the house parties, at which you almost never would find anyone wearing jeans. Can you imagine that!

Alas, those indeed were the days.... However, there are still parties and dinners to attend on New Year's Eve, and you don't have to go casual as most everyone these days does. Break out a vintage dress or gown, carry a dressy vintage bag, or wear some stunning vintage jewelry--be as bold or as subtle as you wish. No matter whether you dress in vintage or accessorize with it, you'll feel great and look great--and we're sure you'll get lots of compliments and admiring looks!

Buying "used" items for people as holiday gifts? Some would think that uncouth, uncool, weird, or "cheap." But, as we vinties know, it's anything but! For anyone who collects vintage "stuff," of any sort, finding a sought-after or long-admired treasure in a Christmas stocking or under the tree is definitely a treat! Especially if it's something one would never buy for oneself. I'm sure we've all been there, done that--lusted after a vintage dress, a bag, piece of jewelry, a Limoges plate, Hull vase, Fenton basket, etc. But we always say, "Oh, I just couldn't buy that for myself," or, "If I have any money left over after buying everyone else's gift, maybe I'll get that (whatever) I've been eyeing." It's not even usually the expense, for many of these items can be found inexpensively, that stops us, it's that we "don't need" it, so we don't get it. Let's change that this year!

Wonderful Winter (and Summer!) Wool

After a summer hiatus, the "Fabric Junkie" is back, tackling a timely subject--wool. As in the past, we're looking at both fiber and weave. Last time we mentioned how one weave (jacquard) can be made in a variety of fibers. This time we'll look at how one fiber can be made in a variety of weaves.

Everyone knows wool, right? But does everyone realize the amazing variety of wools and weaves there are out there? Like silk, wool is incredibly versatile. It can be woven, knitted, or felted; finely or coarsely woven; made in winter or summer weights; etc. It can be made from the coats of not only sheep and lambs, but goats, camel, alpaca, llama, and more. Tweeds, worsteds, twills and gabardines, bouclés.... No wonder wool is one of my favorite fibers!

One would have to write a book to cover all the ways wool can be utilized, so I'll hit just a few common ones.

"Nubby" or rough woolens, typically thought of for outerwear, winter suits, and heavier winter dresses. Two specific weaves that come to mind are tweed and bouclé. A tweed weave is a rough-surfaced wool woven in two or more colors, often in a checked or plaid pattern, but can have a flecked or heathered look. You can usually see the warp and weft yarns pretty clearly in a tweed. The Harris tweeds of Scotland are probably the most well-known ones, but they are produced in other countries as well.

Bouclé is a very nubby fabric woven with tightly looped yarns, often found in winter coats and jackets. The loops can be very short or long, so bouclé doesn't always look the same from garment to garment and can be used in formal or casual looks.

"Suiting" wools, which are smoother and sometimes not easy to recognize as wool. Probably the most familiar of these are the twills and gabardines--weaves with easily visible diagonal lines and with a tighter, finer finish than the woolens. These are often found in mid-weight mens' and ladies' suits and overcoats, although they can vary from heavy to light. Worsted wool is probably what most people visualize when they think of suits, even if they don't know the term. This weave is created using a tightly twisted yarn with smooth finish. The short, "hairy" fibers are combed out of, so that it loses its woolen look. It may not "look" like wool, but when you feel it, you can usually tell that it is. Then we have tropical wool, which is a worsted, but is very plainly woven, very lightweight, and airy--excellent for suits and dresses worn in the spring and summer or in, aptly, tropical climates.

The last wool I'll tackle is knitted wool. While everyone is familiar with loosely woven, bulkier sweater knits, many finer knits are used in apparel. Tops, jackets, skirts, and dresses can be made from these knits. These are lighter in weight than a typical sweater knit, more tightly knitted, and with a much smoother finish. They drape nicely and can be lined or unlined, and be found as a single-knit fabric such as jersey, or in double knits.

We're Mad for Mod!

"So, are you a mod or a rocker?" That was one of the questions of the mid 60s, from one young person to another--as a "hip" thing to say, a pick-up line, or even, really, to see if you had something in common with the other. Yes, people really did ask this question!

What, then, is "mod"? Of course today with selling sites using the term for everything from 50s' fashions to 80s' mini skirts, it's not hard to see why the term has become diluted. Dictionaries define "mod" in many different ways, but, as used at the time, it comes down to the styles, and those who wore them, characteristic of the British youth culture (which found its way quickly to the U.S.) that began around 1963/1964, about the same time as the British music invasion was gathering momentum. It wasn't just the apparel the hip youth wore, it was truly a culture. Carnaby Street shops; the Beatles, their music, and their boots and skinny ties; a new generation of super models; and more.

For a good idea of mod, think of the clothing Twiggy modeled, along with her make-up and hair styles; the TV show "That Girl," in which Anne Marie's wardrobe was the epitome of mod; and bands, not just the Beatles but The Dave Clark Five, Gerry and the Pacemakers, and, here in the U.S., Gary and the Playboys. They all wore great mod apparel. Now, compare those looks with, say, the Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, and The Who, and you'll get an idea of the "rocker" part of the original question!

Of course, "mod" styles changed over the years, and there was some crossover in transition as the hippie and psychedelic culture converted some mods. But mod always denoted a style that generally had more panache and sophistication than other styles that were its contemporaries. Overall, the strong mod influence lasted probably about a decade, from the mid 60s to the mid 70s. Then once disco hit... well, another story for another day.

While it's hard to define "mod" in terms of hemlines, skirt styles, dress profiles, etc., it's something you know when you see it and when you don't! So, skip the chopped-off 1950s' "mini dress" calling itself "mod," and go for the real thing! Here are a few we have available in our shops:

The perfect Audrey Hepburn "Breakfast at Tiffany's" hat! Very dramatic, and so much like Holly Golightly's, with its wide, slightly downturn brim. It's made of semi-sheer woven nylon chiffon on a mesh base, with very interesting construction. Crown is covered with individual, overlapping "petals," giving a slight dimensional look.

An Affair with Accessories

Love vintage fashion, but have a hard time finding clothing that fits? Do you wear vintage on special occasions, but don't feel comfortable in a vintage suit or dress for work? Or, maybe you're a tad hesitant to take the full vintage leap right now, but you like the look? We've got a great solution--accessorize, accessorize, accessorize. With vintage scarves, handbags, belts, gloves, hats, shoes.... Pair a "Kelly" bag with your skirt suit for a "Graceful" look (sorry, but I couldn't resist that), or a novelty bag with your contemporary capri pants. Use a large vintage scarf instead of a belt or sash; I did this a lot when in the corporate world, and got many, many compliments on the look. Wear vintage semi-sheer dressy gloves to a party, or a pair of vintage platforms with a newer mini skirt.

And, of course, you can mix and match vintage accessories with vintage apparel--and they don't have to be from the same era. 1950's scarves look great nipping in the waists of 1960's shift dresses, and an 80's belt can add flair to a 1940's peplum dress or jacket. Fred Perlberg - My Kind of Guy

Well known Fashion Designer Fred Perlberg started his own design business in 1920 at 525 7th Avenue which now houses designers such as Ralph Lauren, Nicole Miller and Jones New York. Not much is seen of his earlier work up until about 1935 when he presented the first of his heavy high sheen satin gowns better known as liquid satin. He was known for simple affordable formal wear for women, simple on style and heavy on glamour. His earlier gowns from the late 30s and early 40s were used for bridesmaid and rumor has it wedding gowns. I have never been so lucky to find or even see one of his wedding gowns. Bridesmaid gowns were paired with matching satin gauntlets and picture hats. Once worn for the bridal party, budget savy American Women would reuse the gowns for formal affairs.

Colors that I have seen are celery green, pink, champagne and gold/yellow. This heavy satin fabric is easily damaged. Corsages were worn pinned to the waist or shoulder area leaving rubs in the fabric which is un-repairable.

My love affair with Fred Perlberg began many years ago when I discovered one of his gowns at a little antique shop. Captivated by this 1940's beauty I have always been on watch for more of his classic styles.. The sight of a Fred Perlberg label sends chills up my spine.

Today you can still find earlier Perlberg satin gowns but be careful. Many have been altered and have fabric damage due to improper storage. Unfortunately satin is not an enduring fabric. I suppose no different than other vintage clothing but then to lose a Perlberg........

He designed until 1968 and sold the label to Roger Milot in approximately 1970. Sadly he passed away at the age of 90 in 1991. He was named Man of the Year by the fashion industry in 1968.

One of the most popular and influential stars in America during her lifetime, with one of Hollywood's longest careers, especially on television, Ball began acting in the 1930s, becoming both a radio actress and B-movie star in the 1940s, and then a television star during the 1950s. She was still making films in the 1960s and 1970s.

Ball received thirteen Emmy Award nominations and four wins. In 1977 Ball was among the first recipients of the Women in Film Crystal Award. She was the recipient of the Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award in 1979, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Kennedy Center Honors in 1986 and the Governors Award from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences in 1989.

In 1929, Ball landed work as a model and later began her performing career on Broadway using the stage name Dianne Belmont. She appeared in many small movie roles in the 1930s as a contract player for RKO Radio Pictures. Ball was labeled as the "Queen of the Bs" (referring to her many roles in B-films). In 1951, Ball was pivotal in the creation of the television series I Love Lucy. The show co-starred her then husband, Desi Arnaz as Ricky Ricardo and Vivian Vance and William Frawley as Ethel and Fred Mertz, the Ricardos' landlords and friends. The show ended in 1957 after 180 episodes. They then changed the format a little - lengthening the time of the show from 30 minutes to 60 minutes (the first one went 75 mins), adding some characters, altering the storyline somewhat, and renaming the show from "I Love Lucy" to "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour", which ran for three seasons (1957–1960) and 13 episodes. Ball went on to star in two more successful television series: The Lucy Show, which ran on CBS from 1962 to 1968 (156 Episodes), and Here's Lucy from 1968 to 1974 (144 episodes).

Ball met and eloped with Cuban bandleader Desi Arnaz in 1940. On July 17, 1951, almost 40 years old, Ball gave birth to their first child, Lucie Désirée Arnaz. A year and a half later, Ball gave birth to their second child, Desiderio Alberto Arnaz IV, known as Desi Arnaz, Jr. Ball and Arnaz divorced on May 4, 1960.

On April 26, 1989, Ball died of a dissecting aortic aneurysm at age 77. At the time of her death she had been married to her second husband, standup comedian and business partner Gary Morton, for twenty-eight years.

Irene Saltern, Unsung Pioneer of California Design

I'm guessing most readers here have never heard of California apparel designer Irene Saltern. Which is, and you'll agree once you know more about her, very surprising, considering she is widely credited as a pioneer of the California sportswear industry. Other designers who were her contemporaries are more well known, but Ms. Saltern's influence cannot be denied.

Her story is incredibly interesting; she was a true Renaissance woman. She was born Irene Stern in 1911, in Germany. A multi-talented individual, she worked for a short time as a radio journalist. Among her neighbors while she was still living in Germany was Albert Einstein, who taught her to sail. Instilled with a lifelong love of sailing, many of her designs were nautical themed. She took fashion classes in Berlin, and when she moved to California with husband Harry Salinger in the late 30s, she became a costume designer for the movies. In the 40s, she was in charge of actress's wardrobes at Samuel Goldwyn Pictures, and was a contemporary of Gilbert Adrian, who was at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The Sept. 14, 1995, issue of the LA Times quotes her as saying, "If [Gilbert] Adrian was the king of designers, I was one of the princesses." She did the costumes for nearly 40 Hollywood films, including The Call of the Yukon and The Howards of Virginia. She was the favorite designer of dancer Ann Miller and actress Martha Scott.

In the late 40s, Ms. Salinger started designing commercially as "Irene Saltern," and became head designer for Tabak of California, one of the powerhouses of the "California Sportswear Revolution." The influence of Irene Saltern and Lou Tabak on the burgeoning industry was profound. Ms. Saltern designed lines of separates and coordinates--jackets, skirts, cigarette slacks, shorts, tops--that were sold with hangtags proclaiming they were "a Tabak Tie-in." She also designed classic dresses and suits, with lines that flattered the female figure. Her designs can be worn today and present as stylishly as they did decades ago. And the fabrics she used, particularly her wools and silks, and the workmanship are exquisite.

In addition to working for Tabak, she briefly headed up her own firm, Irene Saltern of California, and worked for other design houses, including Phil Rose and Lanz of California, from which she retired in 1978. In the 60s, she was noted for starting the trend of those big hardware-inspired chunky belts, after a visit to the hardware store! And, after a trip to India, she started creating Indian-inspired designs, which, of course, were huge in the 1960s and 1970s.

Ms. Saltern passed away in 2005 at the age of 94. Her sketches are preserved at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences, and both her apparel and sketches are featured in the collections of the Fashion Institute of Technology and the Los Angeles County Museum.

The Reflections of Vintage team pays tribute this week to this unsung pioneer and to the amazing California designers who came after her.

Hats Galore by Jeanne Tete

Little is know about the personal life of Jeanne Tete except she was born in Indianapolis and adopted the name Tete to give her design line a French flair.

By 1939 she was already known in New York and was designing for Bonwit-Teller. Later in 1940 it was noted in an ad for the San Antonio store Wolff & Marx that she designed expressly for that store. This information was provided by the Vintage Fashion Guild.

Her designs are always something special. Over the top embellishments for ladies who want to be noticed.

CLARK GABLE -- HOLLYWOOD SUPERSTAR AND MALE STYLE ICON

Hollywood superstar Clark Gable was one of the first influential male style icons.

One mention of his name immediately brings to mind thoughts of the well-dressed Southern gentleman with slick black hair and a mustache that he portrayed in his famous role of Rhett Butler in the 1939 film Gone With The Wind.

However, Gable’s first major contribution to men’s style was in the 1934 film It Happened One Night, where he unbuttoned his dress shirt to reveal his bare chest, rather than the commonly worn undershirt. As a result, sales of men’s undershirts fell at least 75%, according to some reports.

Additionally, Gable appeared in the 1953 African adventure film Mogambo wearing safari wear with epaulets & multiple pockets, a look which has remained in style since that time.

William Clark Gable was born in Cadiz, Ohio in 1901. He left school at age 14, working odd jobs until he married an ex-actress named Josephine Dillon in 1924 (she was 14 years his senior), who helped him train to become an actor.

They divorced in April 1930, and he married Maria Langham (17 years older than him) a year later and went to Hollywood with her in 1931.

Gable arrived in Hollywood at exactly the right time as the movies were looking for a new type of “man’s man” actor, which Gable definitely was. He was signed by MGM and immediately starting making movies, starring several times with Joan Crawford and Jean Harlow from 1931 to 1933.

Around this time he grew his trademark mustache and often wore suits with broad shoulders to emphasize his manly build.

Gable fell in love with the beautiful actress Carole Lombard in 1936 and married her in 1939, after he starred in Gone with the Wind.

In 1941, Ms. Lombard and her mother were killed in a plane crash while she was on a World War II fund raising tour. To honor his wife, Gable joined the Army Air Corps, and although he returned to acting after the war, his devil may care air was gone.

Gable married Sylvia Ashley (the widow of Douglas Fairbanks) in 1949 and divorced her in 1952.

In July 1955 he married Kathleen Williams Spreckles who gave birth to their son in March 1961.

Clark Gable died in November 1960, shortly after he finished filming his last movie, The Misfits, in which he starred with Marilyn Monroe. He was buried in the shrine he had built for Carol Lombard and her mother after they died.

He will never be forgotten, not only for his wonderful movies, but for his enduring influence on the world of men’s fashion.

Make It a Vintage Mother's Day!

Mother's Day will soon be upon us, on May 8. In this country, people usually think Mother's Day began in the early 1900s, when Anna M. Jarvis began campaigning for the creation of an official holiday. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day nationally, and declaring its observance on the second Sunday in May.

But Mother's Day has its roots in ancient celebrations of motherhood, which, rather than being human oriented, focused on symbolism, myth, and religion. The Egyptians' annual celebration of the goddess Isis, the "mother of the pharoahs," is one of the earliest recorded homages to motherhood. The Greeks honored Rhea, their mother of the gods. And the Romans celebrated the goddess Cybele, or "Magna Mater" (Great Mother). The Roman festival occurred in March, around the same time as the Greeks' celebration of Rhea. Among the Roman traditions were the eating of honey cakes and the sharing of flowers. Games and parades also marked the day. The celebration of Cybele was shared by many countries.

Later European celebrations of motherhood were in reference to the Christian Church and fell during Lent, on the fourth Sunday. Parishoners honored the church in which they were baptized (their "mother" church). "Mothering Day" became, in 17th-century England, a celebration of real mothers. Working women were given leave to visit their families, the Lenten fast was suspended for family feasts, and mothers were honored with cakes, flowers, and visits from children who lived at a distance.

When the Pilgrims settled in North America, they stopped celebrating Mothering Day, so there was no tradition in the United States of honoring mothers on a particular day of the year. But, in 1870, Julia Ward Howe, who wrote the lyrics to The Battle Hymn of the Republic, called for an international Mother's Day to celebrate peace and motherhood. Dismayed over the devastation of the Civil War, she called upon mothers to protest the killing of each others' sons. This "Howe's Mother's Day" was celebrated for about a decade, but eventually faded away. However, it planted the seed that would be fertilized by Anna M. Jarvis after the death of her own mother. Ironically, Ms. Jarvis would, in later years, become incensed by what she saw as the deplorable commercialization of the holiday she had devoted her life to seeing to fruition.

Today many countries across the globe celebrate the American version of Mother's Day, or one similar to it, while the English Mothering Day is now called by either name. It is, however, still celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent. In all these countries, gift giving has become traditional.

Mother's Day gifts can be lavish or inexpensive, large or small, practical or just for fun! We think vintage items are wonderful gifts, either to give or to receive. Many moms enjoy the nostalgia that comes with a gift reminding them of their childhoods and their own mothers, while many appreciate the finer quality of yesterday's treasures. Mr John: Society Hat Designer

He was born John Pico Harberger on March 14, 1906 in Munich, Germany, traveling to the US in 1919. He apprenticed as a dressmaker with his Mother, Madame Laurel but shortly formed a partnership with Frederick Hirst which became John-Frederics in 1929. He started his own label, Mr. John, Inc., in 1948 which lasted until 1970.

He created a multitude of styles, romantic picture hats, subdued cloches, turbans, berets and snoods, always relying on the shape and style for effect. He often added close fitting face veils or a single rhinestone as the only embellishment. He designed for movies and movie stars alike including Gone With The Wind. Vivien Leigh wore his bonnet design in the movie. His work was featured on the cover of Vogue magazine during the 1940s and 1950s. Some of his more famous clients were the Duchess of Windsor, Joan Crawford, Rosalind Russell, Gloria Swanson, Gloria Vanderbilt, and Lauren Bacall. Even Marilyn Monroe wore one of his creations in Gentlemen Prefer Blonds. At the same time he was able to craft styles for the ordinary woman, being the most popular milliner of the period.

At his peak he employed 150 people and produced 16,000 hats per year. His labels include not only the Mr. John but John-Frederics, Fredoras, Charmers, Sweet Young Things and Mr. Fred.

In 1957 during an interview with Good Housekeeping he said “My business is strictly an individual business. When I go, there will be no more Mr John. I have only one worry: when I do go, should I reach heaven, what will I do? I know I cannot improve on the halo.”

He died in his sleep of an apparent heart attack in his Manhattan apartment at the age of 91 on June 25, 1993.

Awards: Coty American Fashion Critics Award, 1943; Neiman March Award, 1950; Millinery Institute of America Award, 1956.
